UMOJA CHS Week of Community Service
Umoja CHS; the sister clubs of Sign Language, Speech Chorale and Choir, decided to give back last Christmas by having a Community Service Week at the Dominica Infirmary.
During the week of December 12 - 16 2016, each club played their part at the infirmary.
Each club, with their own unique talent, entertained the elderly either with sign, speech or song. Umoja also assisted the staff with tasks such as cleaning, washing dishes, combing hair, feeding the residents and most importantly filling the hearts of the elderly with warmth and happiness.
The students all expressed the joy they felt in being able to give to give back as well as to bring joy among the elderly who may often be forgotten. Umoja CHS plans to give back in 2017 in other series of community service.
An Advent Message from the CHS Headgirl
As we enter the season of Advent, a season of giving and receiving, a season of celebration and feasting, I wish to ask you to pause with me and consider this: “Are you a grateful person? Do you thank God each day for the gift of life and health? Do you thank Him for the parents and loved ones who daily sacrifice the things that they want for the things that you need? Do you thank your friends for those moments of compassion and counsel they provide? Do you thank yourself even, for being a little bit stronger, a little bit smarter, a little bit kinder, everyday? I ask you to honestly consider your answers, for one very essential key to a successful spiritual and academic life is gratitude. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 states, and I quote :- “Give thanks in all things, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus”. Therefore, as we culminate our term 1 of this academic year, I implore us all to give thanks to God for having allowed us to reach this point; give thanks to Him for the high marks; give thanks to Him for the “not-so-high” marks, for surely they could have been worse.
While today concludes term 1 here at CHS, it commences simultaneously a joyful and festive season for our school body. Therefore, keep “Gratitude” in mind and heart; I say to all, give thanks for the fruitcake, ham, presents and all the other anticipated joys the season brings. Give thanks for the providers of these delights: our parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and other friends and family. Most importantly, let us all remember the reason for the season - the birth of our saviour Jesus Christ - and give the greatest thanks of all for this marvelous gift. For in his life Jesus brought us many gifts: the gift of miracles, forgiveness for the fugitive, salvation for the sinner, and of course, the ultimate gift of His life on the Cross.
It was Winston Churchill who said “Christmas is a season not only of rejoicing but of reflection.” So as we go on our merry ways, fleeing from the school gates like recently released convicts, let us remember to give thanks to God in all things. Do not complain if the shopping money is not as much as you would like or the presents under the tree aren’t as plentiful as you would like. Rejoice and reflect on the genuine meaning of this season. Remember, it is not happy people who are thankful, but thankful people who are happy.
I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year.
A Season of Giving
“Give and it will come back to you... pressed down, shaken together and running over.” It is the season of Christmas, a time of family gatherings, feasting and cheerfulness . Smiles are wider, spirits are jolly and lending hands are everywhere.
To kick off this season of benevolence, the Convent High School Student Council partnered with Queens and Tins, a food drive initiative organized by the present reigning Carnival Queen, Ms Tasia Floissac. To this end, through the generosity of parents, students and teachers, the Council was able to collect 72 cans of food. The items, which consisted of canned milk, meat and veggies, were added to the approximately four hundred cans collected by the reigning Queen and her team, and divided into ten hampers. On Sunday 11th December, these hampers were presented to families in the communities of Coulibistrie, Massacre, Paix Bouche, Fond St Jean, Goodwill and the Kalinago Territory. “They were truly thankful and touched ,” said Ms Leandra Lander, Ms Floissac’s head chaperone.
So let the season of merriment and magnanimity continue. The CHS Student Council wishes all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Convent High School goes High Tech
This end of term CHS is piloting its first ever online testing for multiple choice papers or Paper 1 as they are called. Students are able to use the computer labs at scheduled times to do their exams. For the teachers, it required a lot of educating and preparation prior to the administrating of the exam and organization on the part of administration.
Hats off to the I T Department who engineered and educated all staff to prepare us for this new era of electronic testing!
2017 Miss Teen Pageant Contestant: Cheyenne Zoe Dewhurst
Since the advent of Dominica's national competitive pageants in 1957, the Convent High School has built a proud legacy of victors in both the Teen and Miss Dominica pageants. These forces of talent, beauty and intelligence contribute to local community and culture, and present role models for the girls and young women who look up to them. This year, the Convent High School was proud to welcome back one such success, Mrs Marcella LaRocque-Menal.
Mrs LaRocque-Menal, a Convent High School alumni, was Miss Dominica 1989 and set the national record by obtaining five regional Crowns during her reign. While visiting on Creole Day, she spoke proudly of her alma mater, reminiscing about her days at the CHS and expressing heartfelt gratitude to an institution which helped to set the foundation for the thriving individual she is today.
Mrs LaRocque-Menal was then honored to continue the legacy by sashing the Convent High School 2017 Miss Teen Pageant contestant, Miss Cheyenne Zoe Dewhurst. Resplendent in traditional wob dwiyet, Miss Dewhurst gracefully introduced herself to her peers who applauded in enthusiastic support. A fourth form student, Miss Dewhurst is a passionate lover of music and painting, as well as a diligent pupil of karate. With such a spectrum of talent polished by the experienced tutelage of chaperones such as Ms Audris Jno Baptiste, we have no doubt that she will shine on the eve of Sunday February 19th, 2017, and do the Convent High school proud. We wish Miss Dewhurst every success.
CHS at FLOW CITP 2016
CHS students presented the National Anthem of Dominica in the 3rd Day of the Flow organised 'Creole in the Park' on Wednesday , October 26 2016. Sherniah Alleyne (3-1) rendered the song while Brier Evans (5-A) and Jaide Laurent (5-C) presented in Sin Language.
Culture is appreciated at CHS
As part of homeroom, students of form 3 were engaged in learning various cultural dances. Facilitators Mr. Glenroy Toussaint and Ms. Helena Dangleben shared briefly on our Dominican cultural dances and its importance to young people. They then gave the steps for Bele and Heel and Toe. Students and homeroom teachers took turns demonstrating the steps. It was truly an enjoyable homeroom period.
Many thanks to Mr. Toussaint and Ms. Dangleben for their energy and time.
